Novalogic's Delta Force was originally one of the foremost tactical shooter series in computer gaming. However, if last year's Task Force Dagger is any indication, the series is in decline. The newest game in the series, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, focuses on the UN intervention in Somalia in the 1990s, as portrayed in the popular novel and motion picture Black Hawk Down. The new Delta Force game makes some improvements to the series, but it's difficult to take seriously, especially considering some of the game's action sequences, which resemble old arcade games more than they do actual military operations.


Black Hawk Down is loosely inspired by missions undertaken by elements of Delta Force, the US 75th Ranger Regiment, the 10th Mountain Division, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The game is also filled with real-world vehicles and weapons, but don't let that fool you. Black Hawk Down is mostly a straightforward, simplistic action game with some real-world trappings.

ArmA: Combat Operations
ArmA is a challenging and immersive game of modern warfare, but one packed with plenty of frustrating moments and flaws, as well.


The things that set ArmA apart from the rest of the crowded military first-person shooter field are the same things that set Flashpoint apart from this pack. There's a feeling of verisimilitude in ArmA that you don't get in most shooters, and that's due to the way that Bohemia Interactive approaches the game. Instead of putting you in a relatively small environment or holding your hand while taking you on a heavily scripted rollercoaster of a ride like most shooters do, ArmA plops you down in the middle of a huge island that's 400 square kilometers in size.

While individual missions won't require you to traverse the entire breadth of the island, you will still operate in huge patches of territory, and that really gives you the sense that you are in some real place, as opposed to being in the level of a game.

ArmA is set on the Atlantic island of Sahrani. Think of it as an allegory to South and North Korea, but on a much smaller scale. The Kingdom of South Sahrani is an ally of the West, and the United States has deployed a small US Army contingent there. The NDRS is a totalitarian regime armed with Warsaw Pact equipment and has a nasty habit of invading its southern neighbor. Of course, the North invades the South again, and you'll play from the perspective of the American side, trying to slow and then reverse the invasion. This means that you'll participate in large-scale battles on foot and in a variety of vehicles, as well as volunteer for numerous side missions that require stealth or speed.

The campaign, told through some surprisingly well-done voice-overs narrating otherwise low-budget cutscenes, does feature some nice twists to it. There are basically two kinds of missions in ArmA: primary and auxiliary. The former are required to progress the story forward, while the latter are completely optional and can make your life a bit easier. For instance, if the main mission is a defensive one where you have to stop a big assault, you can even the odds a bit by conducting an auxiliary mission beforehand. This can involve sneaking behind enemy lines to assassinate a key enemy officer or ambush enemy convoys en route to the battle. This provides plenty of gameplay variety, as you can experience the wide range of modern-day military operations, though the downside is that these auxiliary missions can be so brutally difficult that they're often worth skipping, but more on this a bit later.

There are moments that happen in ArmA that are possible only due to the game's scale. You can be crouched on a hill, overlooking a vast valley, and watch enemy soldiers and tanks maneuver several kilometers away. Engagement ranges are much more like they are in real life, as you're trying to nail a target that's a couple hundred meters away. Or, you can literally get lost in a big town, with the crack of assault rifles and the boom of tank cannons around you. Each noise can send you scurrying for cover. Sure, a lot of games have these kinds of immersive sound effects as well, but for the most part they're just general background noise. In ArmA, if you hear assault rifles in the distance, you know that there's actually a firefight going on nearby, and you can investigate or run away from it, if you want. It's amazing how immersive this game is. A perfect example of this is early on, when you're on Humvee patrol and rolling through the countryside and towns of South Sahrani, only to be ambushed. The transition from tranquility to war is jarring, and experiencing it feels like watching news footage or a documentary movie.

Gun

Gun is a free-roaming action-adventure game that takes you to a world without laws, where greed, lust and murder are rampant. As Colton White, a vengeful gunslinger, you must straddle the line between good and evil in a showdown against corrupt lawmen, a murderous preacher, renegade army psychopaths, merciless outlaws and relentless warring tribes, while waging war on horseback, collecting bounties and protecting whores. Gun is the tale of Colton White, a soft-spoken gunslinger raised by a resourceful old hunter named Ned, made instantly likable thanks to an excellent voice performance by Kris Kristofferson.

One day Ned and Colton's hunt lands them on a steamboat carrying some sort of important artifact that Ned seems to know about. However, he's not alone in his knowledge, and as the ship is besieged, Colton barely escapes with his life. He makes his way to Dodge City at Ned's request, and from there embarks on a journey that will put him up against a greedy ex-military railroad mogul and his wicked cohorts. There's a strong cast of characters in Gun, and the 3D cinematic cutscenes are impressively motion-captured and choreographed, making each story mission worth looking forward to if only to see how Colton's misadventures will continue to pan out. Colton will find himself on both sides of the law, allying with a diverse array of different comrades in his efforts to find answers and seek vengeance.

Unfortunately, the story hurries along at a breakneck pace. Situations that seem intended to introduce entire chapters of gameplay tend to be resolved almost immediately. For example, at a certain point, Colton is deputized as a peacekeeper in Empire City, the game's largest town. You expect to then undertake a series of sheriff-style missions, but Colton's career path very quickly goes sour as the story jarringly goes in another direction. It blazes on like this until the end credits roll--maybe six hours after you first begin play, depending on how many side missions you opted to take on and depending on how much trouble you had with the final battle, which is one of the only tough fights at the normal difficulty setting. There's just no time to really get to like (or dislike) the main cast.

The mechanics of gameplay certainly are good, and even though there are only a few main story missions, they tend to be diverse and packed with intense action. Gun carefully walks the line between being a run-and-gun shoot-'em-up and more of a realistic, tactical shooter. You get to use all kinds of different authentic weapons, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, sharpshooters, bows, and dynamite in order to take on vastly superior odds, which Colton can overcome because of his excellent marksmanship and his ability to instantly recover all his health by drinking from his flask (what's in that thing?). Controlling Colton primarily from a third-person perspective, you'll also get to take on ferocious Apache warriors, play with barrels of TNT, fire cannons, and more.
